I have Back Pain! Can Ayurveda Help?

I am suffering from chronic back pain. How can Ayurveda help?

In Ayurveda back pain is known as Kati Sula (Back Pain) or Kati Graha (Stiff back). Traditionally Ayurvedic Vaidyas (doctor) recommends Kati Vasti as a Therapy-of-Choice. However there is a specific protocol which need to be followed to get complete benefit.

Kati Vasti is nothing but retaining of warm medicated oil over the back for a specified time. In normal circumstances Kati Vasti is recommended for a series of 7 sessions. This number of sessions may be increased due to the severity of the situation. Specific oils or combination of oils is selected depending on rea season behind the back pain.

But to perform Kati Vasti, there are prerequisites.

Kizhi Pouch massage

Before going on to the Kati Vasti, the Therapy-Of-Choice, our body need to be groomed. Usually the grooming process is achieved with the help of a combo therapies of Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Oil Massage), Kizhi Pouch massage and Swedana for a period of 7 sessions. By the doing this therapy, muscular spasm which may occur as a complication or sometimes as a cause itself for the back pain, is relieved. Kizhi Pouch massage is performed for the whole back. Combination of herb powders are tied in a linen bag and made in to pouch, called Kizhi, is the made warm after dipping in medicated oil and then patted and rubbed over the whole back and back of the legs and hands. Most clients experience tremendous relief from pain after this treatment. This causes an internal sweating among tissues especially muscular which help it to relax. Clients are required to drink plenty of water after this therapy to supplement the probable loss of water due to internal sweating. Different combination of herb powders are chosen depending on the cause of back pain.

Abhyanga Oil massage and Swedana Steam bath

Abhyanga oil massage and swedana steam bath is done for grooming our body before Kizhi and Kati Vasti. Specific medicated oils are selected for oil massage depending on condition and medicated swedana steam bath is also provided.

Ayurveda also recommend specific Ayurvedic supplements, diet and lifestyle adjustments.

Classical way Panchakarma therapies for managing back pain is as follows.
